Batalla de La Albuera – Mural, Northern entrance

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Murals of azulejos designed by Julio Cienfuegos Linares (1920-1996), manufactured by Cerámica Artística Barcarrota, Badajoz, erected in 1991 along the road N-432a (C/ Avenida de Extremadura) at both the Northern and the Southern entrances of La Albuera.

Depicted are soldiers of the four armies involved in the Battle of La Albuera, fought on May 16, 1811.

Highlighted quotation :
"Oh, Albuera! glorious field of grief !"
(Lord Byron, "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage", Canto the First (1812), Stanza XLIII, verse 1)

Original version of the quadrilingual quotation :
"Even as they fought in files they lay,
Like a mower's grass at close of day
When his work is o'er on the levelled plain
Such was the fall of the foremost slain."
(Edward Fraser, "The Soldiers Whom Wellington Led" (1913), Chapter X, "On the day of the 'Die Hards' : Heroic Albuhera")
