Summary[edit]

Description

Syrian and Lebanese girls are being brought together as part of an initiative to help Syrian refugees in Lebanon get to know their neighbours, at the same time as providing skills that both groups can benefit from.

The training sessions also help UNICEF and the Italian NGO Intersos to provide the girls with information about their rights, healthcare education and safe spaces in which to play and learn.

The majority of the more than 250,000 Syrian girls in Lebanon are not in formal education, for a variety of reasons, including the capacity of the Lebanese education system and that many Syrian refugee families can't afford to send their children to school anyway.

Many of these girls, as well as many young Lebanese girls, are at risk of gender-based violence, abuse and early marriage. There is no law prohibiting child marriage, and many families see it as both culturally acceptable and financially necessary. The training being provided by UNICEF and Intersos, with support from UK aid, is helping to inform and protect these young girls, as well as helping to change attitudes to them.
