| Description |
Family: Barringtoniaceae Distribution: Common along the bunds of tanks, swamps, associated with Terminalia, Pongamia. Found in India, Srilanka, Singapore, Malaysia. It is the common bird nesting tree at Nelapattu, Pulicat bird sanctuaries in the district for migratory birds coming from far off countries like Saiberia.Photographed at Nelapattu . Description: evergreen trees, 5-8mts tall, densly and pendently branched. Leaves 7-12x 4-7cm, oblong-obovate, crenulate, obtuse, base attenuate, coriaceous. Flowers 1-1.2cm across, scarlet in 10-15cm long axillary, pendent racemes.Calyx 5, tube scacely above the ovary, petals 4, adnate at the base to the staminal tube. Stamens numerous, in many rows, connate below, filaments filiform, exerted, all are fertile. ovary inferior, 2 celled, style filiform, stigma small. fruit angular 2-5-3cm long, fibrous berry, one seeded,. Stem bark and rind of fruit is used as fish poison, Wood is soft white, used for building boats and furniture.
