DO C D FURTHER EAST 181 passed me on the road. In order not to lose any moretime, especially as I knew that it would be almostimpossible to obtain bearers for us both, I determinedto set out alone towards the Ubangi. As I marched along the road between Crampeland Sibut, I saw active operations in progress. Anofficer was superintending the construction of a motorroad, at which six hundred men were working, to theimportance of which I have already alluded in ChapterII. Further on I encountered two thousand nativescarrying material for the construction of the telegraphbetween Bangi and Lake Tchad, then reinforcementsdispatched from the Senegal to Wadai with largesupplies of provisions and ammunition, and finallyfifty-nine European officers, medical men, and sub-officers sent direct from France to support the Govern-ment in Wadai. Amongst them I met ColonelLargeau, the successor to Colonel Moll, who was killednear Abescher. He had orders to lead a strong forceagainst the Wadais and Massal
