Summary
[edit]DescriptionBanjo Pier and Looe Beach - geograph.org.uk - 716743.jpg |
English: Banjo Pier and Looe Beach A very popular beach, flanked on one side by the Banjo Pier. The pier was built in the middle of the 19th century as part of the improvements associated with the sudden increase in trade related to the mines. It was originally straight, and called 'The Groyne'. The round end was built in 1868 by Joseph Thomas, entrepreneur and engineer, who was responsible for many Looe developments. The idea was to reduce the amount of sea-sand being carried up river by the tides, and it seems to work. |
