Vishnu Riding Garuda |

Description |
English: As the preserver of the universe and the cosmic order, Vishnu must occasionally awaken from his serpent couch and inspect his realm. The he does by riding his Garuda mount. Thus, in icons that are characterized in Sanskrit as "garudasanamurti," Vishnu is seen astride his mount, who is more man than a bird in this stele. Only the strong, beak-like nose and the wings announce his avian nature.
Garuda kneels on a lotus flower with stalk and foliage to carry his master, whose feet he supports with his hands. Crowned and bejeweled, Vishnu has four arms that carry the club, the wheel, and the conch shell. The extended right hand has a few gems attached to the palm. |
