Summary[edit]

Description
English: Pak Khlong Talat, the Thailand’s largest fresh flower market, is in Wang Burapha Phirom subdistrict, PhraNakon district. “Pak Khlong Talat area covers all three 3 individual markets, being: Yodpiman market (from ChakPhet road to Wang Burapha Phirom), a market administered by the Marketing Organisation, and the Agricultural Product Central Market.

The “Talat Canal”, Khlong Talat, stretches from the mouth of the Lod canal at Wat Ratchabophit to the Chao Phraya River. This canal was a consequence of the initiation of King Taksin as he wanted to expand then the capital city’s eastern part to the south. During King Rama I’s reign, the canal was called “Klong Ku Muang Doem”, and changed to “Khlong Talat” in the reign of King Rama V as there was a market called “Tapan Pla”, a fish market where main products sold were fish, shrimp past, salt, chili, onion, and garlic. This market was later discontinued, and relocated to an area in Wua Lamphong(Hua Lamphong) subdistrict.

The present-day market began in 1953 during the tenure of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram then the Prime Minister as a result from the relocation of a market near Wat Pho and Krom Phutharet ThamrongSak market to this area. Passed in 1962, the 1st national economic and social development plan focused on development of rural area and agricultural sectors. Thus, the market has since gradually expanded in terms of agricultural product lines - vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
