Summary[edit]

Description

I'm still in a monochromatic mood, so I decided to post the BW version of a picture I posted here a few weeks ago.

I originally took this picture with a monochrome conversion in mind, but at the time I thought the final result was too 'heavy' in the eyes, but seeing again now after being in that same place for 2 times last week, yeah, it's still heavy, but the architecture in the area with brutalist influences and the 'dramatic' sky, well, it's a heavy atmosphere there, so I'm comfortable to post this photo because despite its 'heavyness', it's not unfaithful to the scene I was seeing at that moment.

About the Building:

Constructed in downtown Sao Paulo between 1939 and 1947 to be the new HQ of the Bank of the State of São Paulo (Banespa) and inspired by the Empire State Building, it once was the tallest skyscraper outside the USA and the world's largest structure of reinforced concrete.

I said 'Banespa Building' on the title because its official name is Altino Arantes Building, but virtually no one know this, and even though the bank and its assets were sold to the Banco Santander from Spain and the Banespa brand is defunct for almost 20 years, the building is still called Banespa by the people of Sao Paulo.

The building was closed for public visitation in 2015 and underwent an internal renovation, reopening on January 26, 2018 as a cultural and entertainment center named 'Farol Santander', with the word 'Farol' meaning Lighthouse in Portuguese, and viewing from the street level in this particular location where I took this picture, with these ugly buildings resembling giant boxes made of concrete around the skyscraper, it kinda looks like a lighthouse, or a fort...
