La Perouses Map, 1736. ME ARES, TIPPING, AXD STRAXGE. 177 are shown on the map which I copy, and which isremarkably complete, if we consider the limited ma-terial on which it rested. Though far superior toany map made before 1786, its value was of coursemuch impaired by the fact that it was not publisheduntil 1798. La Perouses names were superseded byothers which later English navigators applied beforethe French narrative was known to the world. Thevoyage was continued down past Nootka and thesouthern coast, with occasional glimpses of the coastas the fog lifted; the latitude of several points wasfixed more accurately than ever before, the Englishand Spanish names being retained, and that of NeckerIsland being applied to the rocks off Cape Blanco;13the line of 42° was passed on September 6th, andon the 14th they anchored at Monterey.
