Several names, such asSan Juan, Giiemes, Tejada Island, and Port LosAngeles, are retained on modern maps as applied byElisa, while others given by him and Quimper, suchas Bosario, Caamano, Fidalgo, and Cordoba, are still 1GPantoja, with the launch, from the 11th to the 19th, explored what iscalled the north-west mouth of the port. The names applied were bocas deSaavedra, gulf of San Juan Baulista, canal de San Antonio, port San Isidro,island San Pedro, bay San Rafael, canal de San Francisco, bocas de SanSaturnino, canal de San Juan Nepomuceno, and the great ports of Giiemesand Glralde. The schooner had meanwhile explored the northern mouthand several branches, but no names are given. 17 On Vancouvers map the name was applied to the channel betweenTejada Island and the main, why is not known; and for some equally mys-terious reason the name was again transferred in later years by English geog-raphers to the narrow southern strait that still bears it. It is not strange that on hisreturn to Nootka from the labyrinth, Elisa wrote tothe viceroy: It appears that the oceanic passage sozealously sought by foreigners, if there is one, cannotbe elsewhere than by this great channel. I appendhere another part of Elisas map, showing the outercoast from above Nootka down to the entrance of thestrait. It includes not only his own surveys but thoseof earlier Spanish voyagers.18 In Elisas absence, perhaps before his departure,the Aranzazu, commanded by Juan B. Matute, ar-rived at Nootka from San Bias, presumably withsupplies for the garrison. There was, however, apressing need of certain articles which she had notbrought, and to get these and also the men who hadbeen left sick in California, the vessel made a tripto Monterey and back, Matute leaving
