tate-ment was false is strengthened into well nigh absolutecertainty by a total absence of supporting testimonynot to be reasonably accounted for on any otherhypothesis. There remains but one possible sourceof testimony to shake this conclusion; and that isour present accurate knowledge of north-west coastgeography. To support his claim the Greek pilotmust describe the physical features of the region inquestion more fully and accurately than would bepossible without personal knowledge—more fully, in-deed, than under ordinary circumstances he could beexpected to do in a brief verbal narrative. Extraor-dinary statements demand rigid tests; and when allthe props, but one, supporting a heavy weight havebeen knocked down, that one must be strong indeed.Tolerably good guessing on Fucas part will notsuffice; nor on the part of investigators that lenientcriticism which has led his supporters to say in sub-stance: Supposing him to have made the voyage, 78 APOCRYPHAL VOYAGES TO THE NORTHWEST.

Straits of Juan de Fuca. FUCAS PILLAR. 79 we find in the entrance to Puget Sound certain fea-tures that, with due allowance for the exaggeration,and confusion, and error common in such cases, maybe made to fit his narrative; and admitting thereforethat he discovered the strait, we can account more orless satisfactorily for the loss or suppression of hisoriginal report. Fuca claims to have entered a strait between 47°and 48°, impliedly just above 47°, and even to havesailed by that strait through to the Atlantic; butthere is no inlet within fifty miles of that latitude.Ninety miles farther north, however, in latitude48° 30, there is a strait leading to the body ofwater which, under various names, separates Van-couver Island from the mainland. I give herewith amap of these waters. Fucas strait was thirty or fortyleagues wide at the entrance; this one is twelve ortwenty miles, according to the place and method ofmeasurement.
