Nuno de Guzmans conquest in 1531, extendingto Sinaloa, did much to discredit earlier tales of aprovince of Amazons; but the discovery of a placecalled Aztatlan seemed to furnish some confirma-tion of supposed aboriginal traditions about an Aztecmigration from the north-west. In 1533 the efforts ofCortes were so far successful that Jimenez, one of hiscommanders, discovered land which was supposed tobe an island and named Santa Cruz.
