English: The night of Feb. 10, 2020, local village and municipal authorities throughout the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and other provinces in China were directed by former military and then deputy health administrator Ai Xiang, via the CPC central authority, to use any means necessary to blockade populated areas. This is the three-way crossroads linking the small farm valley of Hengcha (横查屯, behind the viewer to the south), Yaotuan Village (耀团村 to the left), and the market town of Dawan Zhen (大湾镇). Dawan, ahead of the viewer in an easterly direction, has under 10,000 population along the Yu River (郁江) between Guigang to the west and Guiping to the Northeast. This is an important thoroughfare for a large network of farm roads to the south and especially west leading from Guigang. This is because at the east end of Dawan is a main ferry crossing the Yu. This makes Dawan an important market town, with three or four hundred shops. Residents of Hengcha, Yaotuan, and other areas to the west and south were allowed limited temporary access to shop or to continue through to the ferry checkpoint, after having registered and having had their temperature checked. Nonresidents of the immediate area and foreigners would be permitted entry but were warned that they would not be able to return.
