The spurting plume ofsteam sometimes half conceals him; hesits reposeful but alert. Derricks carrytheir loads over his head. Huge bowl-ders and barrows full of splintered rockswing by, lurching and oscillating justabove him. He does not heed them,rarely even looks up. The thunder of ablast not far away hardly makes himturn his head. The thrill and panoplyof the battlefield are not for him. Hemakes no gallery play for the benefit ofthe onlookers who all day long line thebrink of the yawning excavation. Hisattention is given to the quivering ma-chine beneath him.
