by the enormous wealth of manyof her citizens, enhance the architectural beauty and grandeur of Balti-mores structures until the Monumental City has achieved a widespreadreputation of which the inhabitants may well be proud. In this connection may be mentioned the late Jackson Hol-land, whose enviable reputation as an architect was as well-known as thatof any man in the east. Mr. Holland was born in Somerset county, Mary-land, 1832, and was a descendant of the well-known Holland family whichtraces its lineage back to the days of King John of England. The firstHolland of note in this country settled in Anne Arundel county, Maryland,1660, and from him sprang the numerous branches of Hollands now inthe state. Mr. Holland came to Baltimore in his youth. Coming into possessionof considerable capital, he embarked in business, and was successful fromthe beginning. He erected several buildings in Baltimore, among whichwere the present postoffice building, and the American building, which was

In 1893 Mr. Holland took up his residence in NewYork, where he pursued his profession as contractor and builder for fiveyears, at the expiration of which time he returned to Baltimore and againresumed his building operations. For a number of years prior to his re-moval to New York, he performed considerable work for the Baltimore &Ohio Railroad. He was well and favorably known in building circles, wasupright and honorable in all his transactions, and by his courtesy and kind-ness of disposition won and retained a large circle of friends who estimatedhim at his true worth. His political allegiance was given to the Republicanparty, but he never sought or held public office, preferring to devote hisentire time to his home and business.
