Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete copper alloy trumpet brooch dating to the Roman Period (c. 75-175AD). The brooch is similar to Hattatt's No. 1528 (1989, p. 327, Fig. 186). The head is a 'trumpet-like' form and is broadly D-shaped in cross-section. The bow of the brooch tapers towards a circular foot. At the rear of the head is a pierced lug through which the spring would have passed. The spring, pin and catchplate are missing. The head of the brooch has two semi-circular cells that may originally have contained coloured enamel - this is now missing. At the waist there is a triple moulding which is flat at the back. The bow has moulded decoration from the central moulding to the foot.

Length: 51.17mm; width: 13.35mm; thickness of bow: 4.96mm; weight: 13.6g
