Matteo Ricci et Ly Paulus
Description
Français : Matteo Ricci (à gauche sur l’image) et Ly Paulus (nom chrétien de Xu Guangqi, à droite) sont représentés devant un autel surmonté d’une croix et d’une image de la Vierge à l’Enfant. Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) est un missionnaire jésuite italien qui a diffusé le christianisme à la cour de Pékin. Il a introduit les sciences occidentales en Chine et a traduit des ouvrages mathématiques en chinois. Il fut le premier à transcrire les textes de Confucius en latin avec Xu Guangqi (1562-1633). Ce dernier est un ministre chinois, astronome et mathématicien. L’amitié entre les deux savants conduit Xu Guangqi à se convertir au christianisme. Cette estampe montre l’importance du rôle de Matteo Ricci qui, en adoptant la langue et la culture chinoise, a permis l’introduction du catholicisme en Chine. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo
