Saint Gregory the Great
English: Saint Gregory the Great

About 1320-50
Italy, Verona.
Painted limestone.

This sculpture was installed inside the chapter house of the monastery of SS. Mazaro e Celso in Verona around 1800, but it may originally have been displayed elsewhere. The monastery was converted into a parish church in the early 19th century and the figure was probably removed at this time.

There would originally have been three other figures displayed with this one, which possibly depicts Saint Gregory the Great. It is not certain how they were originally intended to be displayed. Although they may have been intended for a church facade, the figures are unweathered, suggesting that they have spent most of their lives indoors.

Given by Sir Henry Howorth, Mr Sigismund Goetze, the Rt. Hon. F. Leverton Harris and Mr F. A. White
