Facade from Sir Paul Pindar's House
English: About 1600

England, London
Oak, with traces of paint
The windows about 1890

This faade came from the London house built in 1600 for Sir Paul Pindar (1565?1650), a wealthy English merchant and the ambassador at Constantinople (now Istanbul) from 1611. Sir Paul Pindar's London home overlooked a main street and was much wider than this surviving portion. Its fashionable facade, with glass, curved windows and carved panels, would have made a striking impression.

Pindar died in 1650, and his house was soon subdivided. The remnants were demolished in 1890 to make way for the expansion of Liverpool Street railway station. Few timber homes of this date survived the Great Fire in 1666.

Given by the Chairman and Directors of the Great Eastern Railway Company.
