Italy, Deruta, 1520-40

The painter's guidelines in blue are clearly visible. the neat circular banding in blue was added by rotating the dish on a potter's wheel. Border patterns were intended to emphsise the shape of the ware.
This type of large dishes called piatti da pompa were produced in Deruta for most of the 16th century. They often show idealised portraits of women, inspired by the paintings of Perugino and Pinturicchio. These dishes commonly have scrolls with moralising inscriptions and proverbs, in Latin or Italian. This beautifully painted dish might have been given to a girl called 'Susanna' (the female name appearing on the scroll) as a present for her betrothal or wedding.
