Español: El Castillo de Berlanga, de matriz renacentista de la antigua "Escuela Italiana", fue construido en 1527 por el Maestre Benedicto, tal vez milanés, el mismo que construyó los Castillos de Gibraltar y Melilla, que todavía se conservan. El ingeniero Benedicto fue traído por D. Juan de Tovar, a quien el Emperador Carlos I, por sus grandes servicios en los campos de Europa le concedió el título de Duque de Frías.
Su fábrica, envuelve al primitivo Castillo cristiano del siglo XII (en cuya Torre, en el XVI, fueron incrustados los Escudos de Armas de los Velasco y Tovar), a su vez aprovechando los muros de la alcazaba árabe-califal del siglo X. Ocupan estas construcciones el cerro escarpado que por el Norte corta el río Escalote, y por el Sur el maravilloso frente de murallas y cubos almenados, grueso y de baja altura, obra románico-bélica del siglo XII, levantado por Alfonso I El Batallador, repoblador de Berlanga en gran parte con judíos de Zaragoza, a los que fue asignado el barrio que aún subsiste, el de la Yubería" Pero el Castillo hecho por Benedicto en el siglo XVI, es de traza cuadrangular, de sólidos y grandes cubos escarpados en los cuatro ángulos, con parapetos atronerados para los cañones y plazas bajas para el flanqueo. Son los cubos que en Italia inventaron Miguel Angel y Leonardo de Vinci, de neta inspiración técnica romana, y es, en definitiva, la composición de gruesos muros que muestra el histórico Castillo de Santángelo, junto al Tiber. |
