Description

Stamp of Belgium; 1976; commemorative surcharge stamp of the issue "400th anniversary of birth of Peter Paul Rubens"; stamp motive with a detail from the painting "Adoration by the shepherds" created by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640); The original painting of the stamp detail was located in the transsept of the "Saint Paul's Church" of the Dominican Order in Antwerp since the 18th Century until to a great fire in the night from 03. to 04. April 1969. This painting could be rescued and at the restauration of the fire damages reappeared an unexpected colourfulness. Rubens painted this painting according to a similar composition which he had created in 1608 on his visit in Italy for the then Oratorians Church in Fermo (Italy). The Antwerp painting was created in the time 1609/1610 in the style of the Flemish baroque and is actual re-located in the "Saint Paul's Church" in Antwerp (Belgium).; The Italian original was created in 1608 and is actual located in the "Pinacoteca civica" in Fermo (Italy).; mint stamp
