English: Armorials of Ayshford family of Ayshford Manor, Burlescombe Parish, Devon. Based on design shown on memorial in Ayshford Chapel to John Ayshford (d.1689). The charges are variously blazoned as "ashen keys", "ash-crops" and "pineapples", "pines pendant". Pineapples unlikely, ashen keys seems optimal description as canting arms: Argent, three ash-crops vert between two chevrons sable (Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.468 "Ashford of Ashford"); Argent, between two chevrons sable three ashen keys vert (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.22, pedigree of
"Ayshford of Ayshford". Also Argent, on a chevron couple closed sable three ashen keys vert and Argent, on a chevron voided sable three ashen keys vert. Depicted in Burlescombe parish church on two Ayshford family mural monuments, tinctures faded/tarnished. |
