Title
axe
Description
English: A Neolithic (flint) polished handaxe (circa BC 3500-1500). All that remains of this polished handaxe is the highly finished butt end. The handaxe has broken across the centre, leaving what at first looks like a striking platform on the broken section. This flint has been reworked, since being polished as many flakes have been taken off the polished surface leaving only part of the butt end in it original polished state. The cutting edge of the butt end is still very sharp, but again due to later reworking much of the cutting edge has been removed. The later flint knapper may have intended to turn the handaxe into another tool. The polished surfaces have been highly finished exposing the mid-creamy grey colour of the flint. Most of the reworking has taken place nearest to the broken end of the flint, as this area is heavily scarred. The flint is slightly worn, this wearing could have occurred as a result of the flint being in water.
