Summary[edit]

Description

Photographed at Wings Over Wairarapa 2021. Really pleased with this shot as I used a very slow shutterspeed to get good prop-blur and managed to get a sharp picture!

Designed in 1935 as a maritime reconnaissance bomber, the Anson was one of the RAF’s most important types when WWII began. It was soon replaced as a front-line aircraft, but was widely used as a multi-engine trainer. Twenty three Ansons were supplied to the RNZAF as trainers; in total over 11,000 were built in the UK and Canada. The Anson has two 420hp Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah radial engines and can reach 188 mph (300 kmh).

Bill Reid acquired his unique Nelson-based Mk1 Anson over 10 years ago and painstakingly restored it to airworthy status. It first flew again in 2012 and has appeared at previous Wings over Wairarapa air shows. His Anson is presented as MH120 of the RAF, which was shot down three days after the War began and its pilot, New Zealander Laurie Edwards, became the first prisoner of war from the RAF.
