ring up in greater masses thanelsewhere. When we come to describe the scenery of theDolomites it is difficult to do it justice. Chiefamong the weird attractions of these amazing freaksof nature is the curious red colouring which is seenwhen the sunset lights the high peaks and thevalleys lie in blue-grey shadow. Many and manyan artist has been fascinated and enthralled by thedifficulty of putting this extraordinary light on hispaper or canvas, and more than one has given upthe task in despair. The first Englishmen to penetrate this region ina holiday spirit were Josiah Gilbert and G. C.Churchill, who wrote a book called The DolomiteMountains. They went for the first time in 1856,returning again and again in subsequent years, longbefore holiday-makers or tourists had ever thoughtof so doing. These adventurous souls approachedthe region at first from the Danube by way ofCarinthia and were accompanied by their no lessadventurous wives, and, as they remark, we weredeprived of the abundant aids which surround thetraveller in Switzerland, and other frequentedroutes, in the shape of guides, horses, side-saddles,etc., . . . moreover our stock of German at that timewas very limited. Mules for the ladies, with spring-less carts as an alternative occasionally, were themeans of conveyance; sometimes goats milk cheeseand bread with coffee were the only food after atreme
