of men called Wallachs are asdifferent from the Magyars as the Magyars are fromthe Austrians. Besides the Wallachs and Rou-manians, which are the two dominant races, there arealso Jews, Armenians, Saxons, and Szeklers, whoare descended from early Magyar settlers, and havedeveloped on different lines from their brothers inthe plain. The Transylvanians are as restless, andas great a thorn in the side of Hungary as she isin that of Austria, and the complete Magyari-sation of the country can never be carried outwith these opposing elements behind. The Stateschools teach in Magyar, but in opposition tothese a large number of elementary voluntaryschools are kept up where Roumanian is the prin-cipal tongue. There are passes into the country from theHungarian side, but toward Russia the mountainsare so precipitous and steep that they give theappearance of artificial escarpments made for de-fence on a giant scale. The highest peaks attain aheight of over 8000 feet. The climate varies greatly,

Transylvania is completely hemmed in by theSouth-Eastern Carpathians, besides being cut up bythem, and its people are mountaineers, looking withdisdain on the dwellers in the level plain. To themlife without heights and hollows, and the constantsense of watchful grandeur given by rising peaks,would be tame and colourless. The mountaineersmuscles are wrought to india-rubber by continualchange of action. His spring is as light as that ofa roebuck. To look down into the blackness of acrevasse, to see the roaring torrent filled by the lastdownfall of rain or by the melting of the pure whitepeaks far above, is an everyday experience withhim, as little noticeable as the passing of wheeledvehicles to a townsman.
