of men called Wallachs are asdifferent from the Magyars as the Magyars are fromthe Austrians. Besides the Wallachs and Rou-manians, which are the two dominant races, there arealso Jews, Armenians, Saxons, and Szeklers, whoare descended from early Magyar settlers, and havedeveloped on different lines from their brothers inthe plain. The Transylvanians are as restless, andas great a thorn in the side of Hungary as she isin that of Austria, and the complete Magyari-sation of the country can never be carried outwith these opposing elements behind. The Stateschools teach in Magyar, but in opposition tothese a large number of elementary voluntaryschools are kept up where Roumanian is the prin-cipal tongue. There are passes into the country from theHungarian side, but toward Russia the mountainsare so precipitous and steep that they give theappearance of artificial escarpments made for de-fence on a giant scale.
