English: he Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is a private sailing club which was formed in 1862. This glass plate negative depicts a group of uniformed Australian Sea Cadets (also formally known as Naval Reserve Cadets and now known as the Australian Navy Cadets) in an open boat near the Squadron's headquarters in Kirribilli. Three men are at the boat's stern. A caption on the negative reads: 'Opening yacht season'. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century. |
