The Mission showed a well-ordered community ofmore than eighty aborigines and half-castes, husbands and wives, single men,boys, girls and infants living in quietness,sobriety, and godliness ; employed in thevarious labours of a sheep-station, and acultivated farm of 260 acres ; supplyingthemselves with clothing and domesticcomforts, dwelling in neatly kept cottages,sending their children regularly to school,and in all respects conducting themselvesin a manner to compare with the bestordered villages in England. Poonindie is now past history, but theMission stations which are beginning todot the northern coasts of Australia,get their inspiration and their policy fromthis settlement.

■^ a The Aboriginals 207 The centre of interest is now transferredto the north, the only district where theaboriginal remains in any appreciablenumbers. The Mission stations already inexistence are seven in number. TheChurch of England manages four : Yar-rabah, fifteen miles south of Cairns in NorthQueensland (1892), Trubanaman or theMitchell River Mission on the Gulf ofCarpentaria (1905), the Roper River Mis-sion on the west coast of the Gulf (1907),and the Forrest River Mission in North-west Australia (1913). The RomanCatholics have one Mission managed bythe Trappists at New Norcia in WestAustralia. The Mapoon Mission belongsto the Presbyterians and the Cape BedfordMission to the Lutherans. To this listshould also be added the Moa IslandMission in the Torres Straits (1907), be-longing to the Church of England.
