Connue sous le nom de Halde Haniel, cette ancienne halde minière est le résultat de l’exploitation de 3.1 millions de tonnes de charbon par les mines Prosper et Franz Haniel depuis les années 1920. Reverdie et devenue aujourd’hui un lieu de promenade, cette halde s’élève à plus de 100 mètres au dessus du site d’extraction. Son sommet, qui offre une vue imprenable sur la région de la Ruhr et son paysage industrialisé, accueille depuis 2002 l’œuvre Totems de l’artiste basque Augustin Ibarrola. Représentant normalement un ancêtre ou une divinité et généralement composés de tronc d’arbres, les totems d’Ibarrola sont plutôt composés d’anciennes traverses de voie ferrée.
