Ces intrépides missionnaires parcouraient un territoire
excessivement étendu ; ils se rendaient d'abord au Témisca-
mingue, de là au lac Abitibi, puis retournaient par le Grand
Lac et la rivière St-Maurice. Le voyage se faisait en canot
au prix de grandes fatigues et de difficultés incroyables. Les
difficultés ou incommodités des missions étaient à cette épo-
que, et sont encore en maints endroits ce quelles étaient du
temps des Jésuites ; même difficulté des rivières où l'on dis-
pute sa vie, sur un frêle canot d'écorce contre les bouillons
des rapides, au milieu desquels pourraient s'abimer de
grands et solides bateaux ; même embarras des portages et
des chemins ; même immense étendue de ces solitudes pro-
