Arch of Constantine. Detail of "liberalitas" attic panel showing evidence of removal of Commodus, who probably sat in an adjacent sella curulis like his father, Marcus Aurelius (who has been recarved into Constantine in this panel). A fragment, likely the remains of his Commodus's foot appears on the podium (yellow arrow). Further evidence of recarving of this part of the relief is the fact that the bottom half of the toga of the man standing on the step is carved in lower relief than that of his upper half. This difference is not easily explained by differential weathering of the panel. Deutsch: Konstantinbogen. Ausschnitt aus der Attika-Tafel der "liberalitas", die Hinweise auf die Entfernung von Commodus zeigt, der wahrscheinlich wie sein Vater Marcus Aurelius (der in dieser Tafel zu Konstantin umgeschnitzt wurde) in einer angrenzenden sella curulis saß. Ein Fragment, wahrscheinlich die Überreste des Fußes des Commodus, erscheint auf dem Podium (gelber Pfeil). Ein weiteres Indiz für die Umgestaltung dieses Teils des Reliefs ist die Tatsache, dass die untere Hälfte der Toga des Mannes, der auf der Stufe steht, in einem niedrigeren Relief ausgeführt ist als die obere Hälfte. Dieser Unterschied lässt sich nicht ohne weiteres durch unterschiedliche Verwitterung der Platte erklären. |
