Summary[edit]

Description

Clay figurine of a horseman. The equestrian component of the festival was comprised of a two-horse chariot race, a four-colt chariot race, and a horse race. Similarly dangerous, the horse race, "keles" – κέλης, was perhaps ca.7,000 meters long. This interesting equestrian figurine was found in a grave of the Late Archaic period. It is in fragmentary condition and very similar to the remarkable equestrian statues of men dating from the same period. The horse stands on a roughly rectangular base while the man holds the bronze reins with both hands. The harness is adjusted inside the openings found on his hands and on the muzzle of the horse. The solid helmet is the dominant feature of the man's head, while his facial features are emphasized by the beard, the large eyes and the expressive mouth. The horse and the base supporting it were covered in a white slip. Traces of a bluish-green color survive on the man's torso and halfway up his arms and thighs.
