The Total Eclipse of the Sun, June 8, 1918From the painting by Howard Russell Butler, N. A. Thecorona and the prominences appear as observed through thinclouds at the U. S. Naval Observatory Station, Baker, Oregon.
Text Appearing After Image:
Tiih C(iLi» Atmosphere of Winter THE IMPRESS OF LIGHT 97 of the atmosphere, and plant foods of the soil, andbuilds up the hydrocarbons and other fuels of animaland vegetable tissue, we find it always mainly in thesolar rays. I say mainly, because, of course, the lightand heat of the stars, the impact of meteors, and theprobable slow contraction of the earth, are all realsources of energy, and contribute their quota. But,as compared with the energy derived from the sun, their total amount is probably something like the ratioof starlight to sunlight; so small that it is quite clear,as we said before, that a months deprivation of thesolar rays would involve the utter destruction of allactivity upon the earth.—The Sun/ Young, All this is true enough. But while we keep in mindthe influence of the sun, let us not forget the otherside of the subject. The sun, it is true, acts withmarvelous power upon the earth; but suppose theearth, like the moon, perhaps, did not respond to thatinfluence
