point of brightness. The bright-est star of Orion, or Alpha Orionis, is the star Betel-geuse, the upper left-hand star of the square. BetaOrionis is in the lower right of the square, and iscalled Rigel. Gamma Orionis forms the upper rightshoulder of the colossus as he faces us, and KappaOrionis is his left foot. Theta Orionis is in the open space of Orion. In thephotograph, we have indicated by a white line whereto find Theta Orionis, with its surrounding open space.Unfortunately, because of the bright light of thenebula, brightest of all at the portion just about theopen space, the very sensitive photographic plate be-comes fogged of much of the details easily seen by theeye through a good telescope. To help you to gainsomething of an idea of the structure of the nebula, areproduction of an astronomers drawing is given.
