Description |
The Hartwell transit room. An astronomer is observing the transit of Venus with a transit telescope, a type of instrument that used to be very common in astronomy; by measuring precisely the time (notice the prominent clock) a star or planet passes the meridian (south), the object's celestial "longitude", called right ascension, is measured. This used to be routine work at observatories during the 19th and parts of the 20th century, a typical meridian transit instrument being used for thousands of such observations each year. A transit of Venus (across the solar disc) on the other hand is a rare event, happening twice each century or so. Iconographic Collections |
