Family: Liliacaea Distribution: Common among bushes and hedges in open forests. Distributed from Africa through S.Asia and Malaysia &N.Australia. Description: Spinous climbing shrubs. Roots elongated fasiculated. Leaves reduced to triangular scaly. Some leaves modified to 3-5mm curved spines.2-3cm long angular cladodes resemble leaves, 5-8cladodes arise in each axil. Flowers white 2-3mm across, in axillary racemes. Perianth lobes 6, spreading, stamens 6 , ovary 3 celled, superior. stigma trilobed. Berries 3-6mm across, globose, scarlet when ripe. The tuberous roots are used in Ayurvedic medicine as a rejuvinating medicine. It is known as Satavari or Pilliteegalu or Sathamooli locally.
