| Description | Back home after 3 weeks in Iran! Iranian security stopped me already on day 1, and what happened seems to sum up all of Iran. I was taking photos of the Shiia mourning festival called Ashura (more on it later), and everyone was friendly and helpful. It felt perfectly safe. After 30 minutes, however, someone grabbed me by the arm, and demanded my journalist pass (I don't have one) and passport (which hotels in Iran keep until you check out). Then he proceeded to drag me to a police car. At that point, ordinary Iranian people stood up for me, and they began to amass around us, demanding my release, putting more and more pressure on the security guy. He eventually balked and let me go, and everyone apologised and wished me a nice stay in Iran. They didn't violently rebel against his oppression, but they did stand up to him and succeeded. A lot has changed in Iran - in 1950s, American photographers covering this festival were literally ripped to pieces by the crowd. |
