Description This is the oldest building on the campus of the UT Medical Branch in Galveston. They call it 'Old Red' for fairly obvious reasons. It is named for Ashbel Smith, who was a physician and Yale graduate who came to Texas in 1837. After the Texas Revolution Smith served as surgeon general of the Republic of Texas and as a minister plenipotentiary to both Britain and France. During the Civil War he commanded Confederate soldiers at the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg. Later, after Texas' readmission to the Union, he served in the Texas legislature and as the first president of the University of Texas Board of Regents. Now, *that* was a career.
