The floor area ofthe buildings is equal to the width of Pennsylvania Avenuebetween the curbs (160 ft.) from the Capitol to AqueductBridge in Georgetown and back to 26th Street, a distance offour and a half miles. The building which nearest approaches these Washingtonbuildings in size is the Equitable Building in New York, whichis forty-one stories high and has 1,700,000 sq. ft. of floor space.This building was under construction for nearly twenty-onemonths, while the Navy and War Buildings, which cover afloor area of almost forty-two acres, were constructed in lessthan six months. The latter buildings were begun on March25, 1918, and the moving-in began on August 16th. By Octo-ber 7th, all wings of both buildings were occupied. It would take six such structures as the State, War, andNavy Buildings, which cover the whole of a long city block, toprovide equal floor space.
