Summary
[edit]DescriptionArnott's Buildings, Belfast - geograph.org.uk - 564406.jpg |
English: Arnott's Buildings, Belfast Arnotts department store, on the corner of Bridge Street and High Street, was destroyed by the Luftwaffe during WWII. The present building (neatly divided, on the apex, by a grid line) dates from 1955/57. The store did not survive the bombing campaign and closed in August 1974. Irrespective of that, the area had become peripheral to the main shopping streets. A feature of the store was that it was one of the last (if not the last) in Belfast to use a pneumatic tube system to handle customers money (in the days before plastic). This is the Bridge Street façade (in this square). |
