Het origineel werd ontdekt in het théâtre antique, in drie stukken gebroken. De armen zijn nooit teruggevonden. Het zou een Romeinse kopie zijn van een werk van Praxiteles (de Aphrodite van Thespies) dat dateert van 360 v.C.

Lodewijk XIV vond haar zo mooi dat hij het origineel naar Versailles liet verschepen. Het origineel staat momenteel in het Musée du Louvre.
