e first page was adhered to the front pastedown; the paper was skinned where separation had been attempted. There was evidence of insect damage on some of the pages and both pastedowns. The printing ink varied in intensity. A bookplate was adhered to the front pastedown. TREATMENT PROVIDED:Treatment was documented with color slides. The pHwas recorded before and after treatment: before 4.0,after 7.0. The volume was collated and disbound.The inks were tested for solubility. The pages weredry cleaned, washed and then alkalized (deacidified)with calcium hydroxide. Tears were mended andfolds guarded with Japanese kozo paper and wheatstarch paste. The bookplate was removed with localapplications of moisture and readhered onto the newpastedown. The volume was sewn on linen tapeswith linen thread. Handmade paper endsheets withlinen hinges were attached. The volume was casebound in full cloth and titled using a gold-stampedleather label. Northeast Document Conservation Center March 2003 DW/KI
