apeon of Alexandria was to stand closebeside Greek temples and Praetorian barracks. Thusa space, at least eight miles in circuit, was coveredwith buildings of varied architecture, while thegrounds were laid out in groves, lawns, and planta-tions, intersected by beautiful streams, and enrichedwith numberless works of art. The villa is supposedto have been mostly destroyed during the invasionof the Huns ; but for centuries the Romans con-verted its rich marbles into lime, while statues andcolumns removed thence are found in almost everypalace and church of Rome. Many of the mosaicfloors of the Vatican were brought from thence, aswell as some of the finest statues of its galleries ;while the Capitoline Museum boasts, as a part of itsspoil, the mosaic known as Plinys Doves and the io6 Architecture. beautiful Faun in rosso antico. Neither are thesetreasures confined to Rome, but are scatteredthrough the various galleries of Europe, and every-where reckoned among the gems of the collection.
