ley Park are many fine specimens, one of which contains nearly14 loads of timber ; at Hackwood Park, three oaks were felled in 1836, which measureil 101ft,115 ft.,and 116 ft. in length, and 8 ft. 4 in., 9 ft. 4 in., and 10 ft. 4 in., in girt; at Sharfield, near Basingstoke,on another estate of Lord Boltons, there is a fine growing oak, 12 ft. in girt at 3 ft. from theground, 80 ft. high, and with branches projecting 3<l ft. from the trunk ; in the New Eorest there are12 oaks, calkxl the Twelve .\postles, which arc fine sound trees, though somewhat stag-horned in thebranches, the largest hasatrunk mea8uring22ft. 6in. in circumference. In Kent.at Cobham HM, aremany fine spicimens, with trunks 24 ft. in circumference. The Bounds Park Oak, near TunbridgeWells, is figured in the folio edition of Strutts Sylva Britannica :— At 2 ft aUive the ground, it is22 ft. in circumference; its trunk is straight and uniform; it throws out a great number of limbs, and 1838 ARBORETUM AND FRUTICETUM.

bears a grand head ; it is G9ft. high; and the extent of its boughs, from east to west, is IH ft.(Lauders Gilpin, ii. p. 256.) There are several fine oaks in the park of Karl Stanhope at Chevoning,near Seven Oaks. One of these is l* ft. 6 in. in girt at 3 ft. from the ground ; and the diameter of thehead is 84 ft. From a leaf of this tree sent us by Earl Stanhope, it would appe.ir to be Q. sessilifibra;but of this we are not certain, tn Somersetshire, at Brockley Hall, it is Soft, high, with a trunkabove 36ft. in circumference; at Nettlecombe, 220 years old, it is 100ft. high, the diameter of thehead 50 ft., and circumference of the trunk 20 ft. In Surrey, at Claremont, it is 76 ft. high, thediameter of the head 80ft., and girt of the trunk 13 ft. 6 in. In Sussex, at Cowdray, it is 60 ft. high,the diameter of the head 103ft., and girt of the trunk 16 ft. 6in.; at Kidbrooke, 100 years old, it is60 ft. high, the diameter of the head 88 ft., and girt of the trunk 21ft.
