In Lima, Peru more than a third of the city’s 9 million occupants live in slums, many without reliable access to clean water. The city’s primary water supply, Andean glaciers below 5500 meters, will melt as a result of climate change. University of Washington students are experimenting with fog harvesting technologies to extract water from the shroud of fog that covers Lima from June to December. They are designing and evaluating new fog collection materials, configurations and systems to provide clean drinking water and irrigate public gardens for slum communities. A student team member from the University of Washington team explains how their fog collection systems works.
