English: On Oct. 11, 2020, a huge wall of dust (haboob) about 200 miles long blew more than 300 miles from eastern Colorado into Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, and the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles. The term haboob is derived from the Arabic word, habb, which means “to blow” or “strong wind.” A haboob is an intense sand or dust storm caused by strong winds which can carry the dust through hot and dry regions to heights as high as 10,000 feet. This image of the approaching haboob was taken at 7:24 p.m. along a gravel road in Cimarron County in far western Oklahoma. |
