Rückseite: M - CICERO - M F / PROCOS // ΘEOΠPOΠOΣ / AΠOΛΛΩNIOY. Zwei sich aufrichtende Schlangen, zwischen ihnen ein Köcher. Im l. F. außen AΠA, im r. F. eine Doppelflöte (aulos). Kommentar: M. Tullius Cicero traf am 31.7.51 v. Chr. als Prokonsul der Provinz Kilikien in Laodikeia am Lykos ein (Cic. att. 5,15,1; fam. 3, 6,6). Er verließ seine Provinz am 30.7.50 v. Chr. Vgl. Stumpf (1991) 55. - Als Cistophoren bezeichnet man eine Gruppe von Silbermünzen im Gewicht von 3 attischen Drachmen oder römischen Denaren zu etwa 12 g. Ihren Namen tragen sie nach dem Korb auf der Vorderseite, aus dem eine Schlange hervorkriecht. Sie wurden in Pergamon unter Eumenes II. für das pergamenische Reich als überstädtische Währung eingeführt. 16 Städte erhielten das Prägerecht für das Silbergeld. Cistophoren wurden über das Ende des pergamenischen Reiches hinaus in der Provinz Asia durch römischen Magistrate weiter geprägt. Literatur: G. R.
