English: Antler Matchsafe, late 19th century
Description
English: Oblong, snuff box style box, its body comprised of pieces of hollowed out antler, the lid framed in decoratively cut metal with a thumb catch at its front and a small unadorned plaque attached to its top. The sides are attached to the main body with continuous ribbed bands that wrap around the irregular, slightly tubular container. Matches were likely intended to be struck on highly textured box body itself.
