La partie ancienne de ce Chateau fut batie par Guillaume Lord Greyftoke,furnomme le Bon; il mourut dans la 32% annee du regne dEdouard III. &fut enterre avec pompe dans le Chanceau de Feglife paroiffiale du lieu. On dit que le vieux Chateau etait primitivement quadrangulaire flanquede quatre Tours avec une grande Porte dentree. La plus grande partie enfut brulee dans les guerres civiles, fous le regne de Charles I. il refte cependantdeux des anciennes Tours, Tune defquelles encore entiere, a trois etages, &contient fix Chambres acoucher, & ungrand Souterrein, qui fervait autrefoisde Prifon, & dont on fe fert aujourdhui comme dune Cave. Cette ancienne Tour, objet principal de lEftampe, eft fituee obliquement,par rapport aux autres parties du Chateau, dont la plus grande partie a etereconftruite a la moderne au commencement de ce Siecle. This Cattle is mentioned in the time of Edward II. In the reign ofRichard II. it is faid to have been rebuilt by Sir Richard de Adderbury, orAbberbury, Knight, of whofe defcendant it was purchafed and inhabited bythe celebrated Englifh Poet GeofFry Chaucer; from his Family it went bymarriage to the de la Poles, and it was afterwards in the poffeffio
